Chanel: Mike, what’s that noise?

Mike: Isn’t it great? It’s rock music — my favorite.

Chanel: That’s music? It sounds like noise to me!

Mike: Nah! Here, listen to this song, it’s great. (turns up music)

Chanel: Hmmmmm. I don’t know.

Mike: (turns down music) Well, what kind of music do you like?

Chanel: I like hip hop and salsa. I like to dance.

Mike: Huh. I like other kinds of music, too. Country is great.

Chanel: That’s cool. Well, I’m going to the gym. Enjoy your noise – I mean music!

Mike: Ha. Thanks.

Jared: Hi Dina! What did you do for the 4th of July?

Dina: We had a BBQ at the park. It was fun.

Jared: Neat. Who was there?

Dina: There were a lot of people there. My husband’s uncle, aunt and his coworkers were there. What did you do, Jared?

Jared: I had dinner with my neighbor, a classmate from school and three friends.

Dina: How was it?

Jared: It was relaxing. I like July 4th. It’s a fun holiday.

Dina: I like it too.

Susan: Eduardo, tell me a little about yourself. Where did you grow up?

Eduardo: I was born in Quito, but I grew up in Mexico City. Where did you grow up?

Susan: I was born in New York City and grew up there. When did you move here to the US?

Eduardo: I moved to the US in 2000 to finish school.

Susan: Oh, where did you go to school?

Eduardo: I went to school in Chicago. I got married there. After we had a baby, we moved here.

Susan: Do you like it here?

Eduardo: Yes, I do.

Julia: (BIG yawn)

Brian: Hi, Julia. You look tired.

Julia: Hi, Brian. I am tired. I don’t stay up late on weekn.

Brian: Really? When do you go to bed?

Julia: At 9:00.

Brian: Wow, it’s 11:00 now!

Julia: I know. And I have to go to work early tomorrow morning.

Brian: What time?

Julia: At 7:00am

Brian: Wow! That is early.

Isaiah: Hey, Mom, what are you doing right noW?

Mom: I’m making dinner. Why?

Isiah: I’m cleaning the bathroom but I need cleaner. Can you drive me to the store?

Mom: You’re cleaning the bathroom? (surprised) Wow, that’s great! Yes, I can drive you to the store. Does your sister want to go?

Isaiah: She can’t. She’s studying.

Mom: Ok. I’ll be right now.

Andrea Yes, it is. Do you ride your bike every day?

Eric: Yeah. It’s the easiest way for me to get to work.

Andrea: Do you have a long ride to get here?

Eric: No – only about 10 minutes. It’s not bad.

Andrea: Wow! I have a long commute. I drive 40 minutes to get here!

Eric: Yeah, 40 minutes– that is a long commute! For me, a bike is the fastest way to get here during the week.

Andrea: Yeah, but I drop off my daughter at school every day, so driving my car is the most convenient way for me to get here.

Tom: Hey Ana we missed you at Rick’s birthday party last weekend!

Ana: Aw! I was sorry not to go. Who was there?

Tom: Well, Rick invited all his coworkers and family. His wife, brother and cousins were there.

Ana: Was his neighbor Tino there?

Tom: No, I don’t think so.

Ana: Were his grandparents there?

Tom: Yes! They just moved here last week!

Ana: Wow! I’m sorry I didn’t meet them.

Mark: My family is to visit next week, so this weekend I’m going to get ready! I have to clean out my closet, vacuum the house, do some yard work and pick up groceries.

Zara: Wow. That’s a lot!

Mark: Yep. What are you going to do?

Zara: I’m not going to do anything.

Mark: Oh, you can come help me then!

Zara: Ummm…, I have to…ummm..wash the car.

Tiago: Hey Dani! What are you up to? Do you want to come to the store with me?

Dani: Sorry, I can’t, I’m studying.

Tiago: Okay. What’re you doing this weekend?

Dani: Well, Saturday afternoon I’m going to the library with my daughter to check out books.

Tiago: That sounds nice, anything else?

Dani: I’m getting coffee with a friend on Sunday afternoon. How about you?

Tiago: I’m going to the lake with my family on Sunday.

Dani: That sounds fun!

Lara: Manuel, What are you doing now? Do you want to come to the library with me?

Manuel: Sorry I can’t, I’m cleaning the kitchen.

Lara: What about tonight, do you want to come with me then?

Manuel: Sorry, I can’t, I’m studying English with my classmate.

Lara: What about tomorrow?

Manuel: Ah, sorry, I can’t tomorrow. I’m going to a concert.

Lara: Wow! You are very busy.

Nelson: I didn’t go anywhere. I stayed home and spent time with my family. We went to the pool and had a BBQ.

Marla: Nice to see you, Gino.

Gino: Nice to see you too, Marla! I know you are a vegetarian. How does the menu look?

Marla: Mmmm this menu looks delicious.

Gino: Great! What would you like to eat?

Marla: I’d like the pasta with a side of vegetables. How about you?

Gino: That sounds good. I’d like to have the steak with a side of french fries.

Marla: Don’t you want some vegetables?

Gino: Mmm, okay, I can get the vegetable soup as an appetizer.

Marla: Don’t eat too much – I’m sure you’d like a dessert too.

Gino: Oh yeah! I’d definitely like a dessert!

Post Office Employee: I can help the next person. Hi, how can I help you today?

Luis: Hi. I need to mail this package to New York please.

Post Office Employee: Okay, let’s weigh first. [beep of a scale] It’s 5 pounds.

Luis: How much does that cost?

Post Office Employee: Standard mail is $9.50. But, if want it to get there faster, Priority mail is 2-3 business days. Priority mail costs $15.98.

Luis: Priority is good. Thanks.

Post Office Employee: Can I help you with anything else today?

Luis: Oh, yes. I need some stamps.

Post Office Employee: Okay, it’s $11 for 20 stamps.

Luis: good.

Post Office Employee: Your total today is $25.98.

Luis: Thank you.

Woman: What are you doing later Carlos? Want to hang out?

Carlos: Sorry, I can’t. I’m volunteering with my neighbor later.

Woman: Really? Where do you volunteer?

Carlos: At my church.

Woman: Cool. What are you going to do?

Carlos: Well, I’m going to help clean the church. I help vacuum the floors, clean the bathrooms and I do some yard work.

Woman: That’s nice of you. Want to volunteer at my house?

Fiona: Hey Mario, how old is your grandson now?

Mario: He’s 10.

Fiona: Wow! He’s getting bigger! What’s he like?

Mario: He’s really outgoing and athletic.

Fiona: What does he like to do?

Mario: He loves to play sports. Soccer is his favorite.

Fiona: He sounds like you.

Mario: Yes. He looks like me, too.

Fiona: Oh yeah? What does he look like?

Mario: He’s tall and handsome.

Dawa: Hey Kathy!

Kathy: [coughing, congested voice] Oh, hi Dawa.

Dawa: Oh no, do you a cold?

Kathy: Yes, I do. My whole family is sick.

Dawa: I’m sorry to hear that. What’s wrong?

Kathy: Well, I have a sore throat and a runny nose. [cough] | also have a cough.

Dawa: I can hear that.

Kathy: My husband has a fever. My son has a runny nose and cough too.

Dawa: Oh no! That’s awful. Can I bring you soup?

Kathy: Oh, yes please. Thank you.

Mara: So, Ravan, when did you move to the US?

Ravan: About 8 years ago. I remember when I first came here.

Mara: Oh wow. What was it like to move here?

Ravan: I was lonely at first, but I was also excited to be in a new place.

Mara: Yeah, I remember when I first came to the US too.

Ravan: How did you feel?

Mara: I was sad because I missed my family. But, I was surprised by how friendly the people were. I was happy to make new friends.

Luisa: Hi Andrew. What did you do on Thanksgiving?

Andrew: We visited my wife’s family.

Luisa: Did they make Thanksgiving dinner?

Andrew: No, we went to a restaurant. What did you do?

Luisa: We stayed home. My children were home from college and we watched the parade on TV.

Andrew: sounds fun.

Luisa: It was!

Tran: My favorite holiday is Tet. It celebrates the New Year in Vietnam. Last year, I went home for the holiday. I brought a small gift to my brother-in-law and sister.

I watched a parade with my friends. Then we ate chicken and sticky rice for dinner together.

Mike: My favorite holiday is the 4th of July.

It celebrates the US as a country. Last year, I went to a park with friends. I brought hamburgers and hot dogs and cooked at the park. We watched the fireworks at night.

Danielle: So, Sergio, which house do you like better? The blue house or the green one?

Sergio: I think the green house is better than the blue one.

Danielle: Really? Why?

Sergio: The green house has wider hallways. It has a better view and a bigger kitchen than the blue one.

Danielle: But I really liked the blue house. It had a prettier kitchen and was on a quieter street than the green one.

Sergio: Which one is less expensive?

Danielle: The blue house is less expensive than the green one.

I’ve looked at 4 places so far. Here are my choices:

Home #1 is a house in the country. It has bigger rooms and better views the city. It’s a big house.

Home #2 is an apartment downtown. It has narrower rooms and a smaller kitchen. The apartment has natural light and an okay view.

Home #3 is an older home. It is cheaper but needs to be cleaned up. It has wider closets and a bigger kitchen.

Home #4 is an apartment with a great view.

It has lots of natural light and bigger rooms. The kitchen is smaller, but the neighborhood is great.

Santiago: Wow! Our fridge is empty! I’m going to go to the grocery store. Do you need any groceries?

Belen: Yes, you! We’re out of fruit and vegetables. Please pick up some strawberries and carrots.

Santiago: Okay – what else?

Belen: Umm, do we have any yogurt in the fridge?

Santiago: No, we’re out of yogurt too.

Belen: Okay, please get some yogurt too. And also a bottle of bathroom cleaner.

Santiago: Okay, do we need any bread?

Belen: No, we don’t. We have 2 loaves in the refrigerator.

Santiago: Okay. Text me if you think of something else.

Bria: Yeah, but if I don’t like something ! always return it. How about you? Where do you go shopping?

Aaron: I shop at the mall. I like to go to the stores. Sometimes I get really good coupons in the mail.

Bria: Oh wow – I never use coupons. I need to look for those more often!

Thapa: What are you up to Carol?

Carol: I’m going to a doctor’s appointment.

Thapa: Oh, are you okay?

Carol: I’m fine! She’s helping me get into shape and stay healthy.

Thapa: Really? What are you doing to stay healthy?

Carol: Well, I’m watching my weight. I have diabetes, so I watch the sugar in my diet.

Thapa: Oh, is that hard?

Carol: It’s not bad. I’m also taking a dance class to get more exercise. There’s a fun class on Saturdays at the gym next to my house.

Thapa: Really?

Carol: Yeah! Do you want to go with me this weekend?

Thapa: Mmm okay!

Carl: Hi, I have a question about my electric bill. I received an overdue notice in the mail.

Patty: Okay, what’s your name?

Carl: Carl Brown.

Patty: What’s your account number, Mr.

Brown?

Carl: It’s 684-930-11.

Patty: Got it. What’s your question?

Carl: When is my bill due?

Patty: It looks like it’s overdue. It was due last week on the 14th.

Carl: Oh, no! Is there a late fee?

Patty: Yes, there is.

Patty: It’s $10.

Flor: I applied for a nail technician position at a beauty salon and a cashier position at a grocery store.

Flor: I’m not sure. Both of them have good benefits, but I prefer a job with flexible hours.

Liam: Do they both have flexible hours?

Flor: The technician one does, but the cashier one doesn’t. The cashier job has a more comfortable environment though.
